Hey so I was scrolling the web looking for answers for a friend that was wondering about Gods commads in the old and New testament. I noticed a lot of your notes deal with commands or the law. He believes that the law in the old testament is something that we should still follow as law today so that we can be righteous. Something that I pointed him to was Galatians 2:19 "for through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with christ. It is no longer I who live, but christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then christ died for no purpose." Do you believe that righteousness is found through the levitical law? Or do you have anything that could help me with my friend that does.
ReplyDeleteHello "Anonymous" friend who "randomly" found my page. Since you didn't leave your name on the post, I am not sure what to call you, or if my response will even get to you, or why you'd consider my advice... but Thanks for taking the time to comment.
DeleteSo, to answer your "objection"/ "Concern" to what your "friend" is saying lets dig in here
Lets start by backing up to the issue in Galatians In chapter two Paul writes " nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified"
This is the entire point of the book of Galatians. We are not, NOR HAS ANYONE EVER BEEN, Saved by following the Law. The Law of God was NEVER for salvation.
In Galatians 1:6 Paul states that this idea of following the Law for salvation is DIFFERENT than what was being taught:
"I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ."
Acts 15 gives us a greater idea of when this teaching started and by whom, and why Paul wrote the entire book of Galatians to combat this ONE idea that was SPRINGING UP about The Law of God being for Salvation.
Acts 15:1Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 15:5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses.”
Peter, Paul and James and everyone rebuked this thinking.
SINCE this was a NEW teaching that was being introduced... Then we know that The Law of God was never for Salvation.
Look at Hebrews 11, does any of it say that the people were following God's Commands for salvation, or were they acting out of faith the same way that you and I are?
Tell your friend if their desire to adhere to the Commands of God is rooted in anything other than a desire to be obedient OUT of a LOVE and response to FAITH in HIM, then it's misguided.
The way that I figure it is there are two, maybe three ways to see it.
1) You think you need to follow God's law to be saved- then you're in error and Galatians and Acts 15 is trying to warn you that you can't do that
2) You don't think that obedience to God's holy righteous Word is something to bother with Since you are saved- Consider Matthew 7:21-23 and 2 Thes 2 and 2 Peter- 3:14-17 in hopes that you can heed warnings
3) Since you are saved by Grace, and Titus defines Grace as redeeming us from every Lawless deed, From Sin which is the transgression of God's Law (1 john 3:4), and you are part of the New Covenant ( which is the Law of God written on your heart), you strive to be conformed to the image of Christ ( who walked and taught obedience to God's Commands)
I hope that helps "Anonymous" friend.
Thank you for your reply! the reason i posted anonymously before was i was not sure if i wanted to put my name on the comment. This helpful in my understanding of Galatians, however doesn't Paul himself refer to the law as a bondage? in Galatians 3:23 -27 Paul says "23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
DeleteI am asking this because the way that I have always seen it is that because Christ came and died our faith in Christ is how we should live and no longer according to the law, because the law had imprisoned us and now Jesus sets us free. Im not sure what all of the "friend", and "anonymous" stuff was about but i thank you for your reply.
Jonathan Winston.
Jonathan, Thanks for giving me a name to call you by man. You ask a good question "Is following God's Law Bondage?"
DeleteAccording to James 1:25, The law isn't Bondage but is instead perfect and freedom. This is the same Law King David says is perfect and freedom in Psalm 19:7,Psalms 119:44-45.
Here's an example of what Paul is saying in the Galatians if you will allow me to use a modern analogy.
Lets say that our modern laws are like the Laws of God. just as we have laws that protect our freedom, Those same laws impose penalty for violations. If I am driving 90 miles and hour in a 60 mile per hour zone and a cop pulls me over, I am deserving of the penalty that is accompanied with the violation of that law.
If I go before the judge and I plead guilty, and I ask for mercy from the judge and he lets me off with a warning... tell me, did that law change? Since I am under the grace of the judge, does that mean that I am good to go out and go 90 miles an hour again? That is the point of Pauls writing here.
"Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law"
Before faith came. When you read Hebrews 11, you see that everyone in the OT was saved by Grace through Faith same as you or I. Without that Faith, we've still violated the Law... but we go into the courtroom with no Lawyer. We do not plead for mercy from the judge. Without Christ as our advocate, that Law is a penalty since we're always breaking it. Since we sin daily, its a death sentence.
"But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe."
Everyone went 90mph in that 60mph zone. Those who are in Christ are no longer issued the fine. If we're living like Christ, and Christ obeys the limits, then we are going to obey the limits.
Christ set us free from the penalty of death. Galatians is all about how we are not saved by anything we did. We are saved by the sacrifice of Christ, and now out of a response... we're called to live like him, and obey God. We're called to NOT live like satan who tries to get people to "speed" and "break the Law" (2 thes 2, Rev 12:17)
Paul says in several places that he loves God's law and regardless of if you're a Jew or Gentile, keeping the Commands are what matter for the people in Christ 1 Corinthians 7:19
Nice to meet you, Winston. I am happy to field anymore questions that you have my friend.

ReplyDelete“Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ. "
What is human tradition? Lawlessness.
What is Divine obedience? Keeping the Law of God through grace and faith because you are saved.
Mat 13:41 -42
41 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness
42 and they will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Whose being gathered?
Out of where?
To where?
The stumbling blocks and those that do lawlessness, are gathered OUT of the Kingdom of God , and thrown into the fire.
Its just as 2 thes 2 says :
7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is removed.
8Then that lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will eliminate with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming;
9that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and false signs and wonders,
10and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not accept the love of the truth so as to be saved.
11For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false,
12in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.
Traditions of men have us thinking that God's Law is a burden or a means to salvation rather than what it is, the new covenant. Hebrews 10
15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,
16“THIS IS THE COVENANT WHICH I WILL MAKE WITH THEM
AFTER THOSE DAYS, DECLARES THE LORD:
I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEARTS,
AND WRITE THEM ON THEIR MIND,”
He then says,
17“AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS
I WILL NO LONGER REMEMBER.”
